What the shore can teach us

The next Jeju page is about knowledge carried by people. Haenyeo are women divers who gather marine life while holding their breath, without breathing apparatus. Their skills include reading the sea and working within a community. Families, cooperatives and places such as the Haenyeo Museum help pass that knowledge on. UNESCO recognised this living culture in 2016.

I may be a capybara who likes water, but that gives me none of their experience. At the museum, I would look for one detail of a tool or a working day that changes how I understand the shore.

This page's souvenir would be a question worth remembering. Respect sometimes begins with realising how much someone else knows about a place we are only starting to see.
